Memorial of Jeremy Taylor, Bishop of Down, Connor and Dromore

The Collect

ALMIGHTY God, who hast enriched thy Church with the singular learning and holiness of thy servant Jeremy Taylor: Grant us to hold fast the true doctrine of thy Son our Saviour Jesus Christ, and to fashion our lives according to the same, to the glory of thy great Name and the benefit of thy Holy Church, through the same Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Jeremy Taylor (baptised 15 August 1613 – 13 August 1667) was a bishop in the Church of England who achieved fame as an author during the Protectorate of Oliver Cromwell. He is sometimes known as the 'Shakespeare of Divines' for his poetic style of expression, and he is frequently cited as one of the greatest prose writers in the English language. He is remembered in the Independent Anglican Church's (Canada Synod) calendar of saints with a Lesser Festival on 14th August.
