Memorial for Columba, Abbot of Iona

The Collect

O God, by the preaching of your blessed servant Columba you caused the light of the Gospel to shine in Scotland: Grant, we pray, that, having his life and labors in remembrance, we may show our thankfulness to you by following the example of his zeal and patience; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Readings: (1 Corinthians 3:11-23; Saint Luke 10:17-20)

Saint Columba was an Irish abbot and missionary credited with spreading Christianity in what is today Scotland at the start of the Hiberno-Scottish mission. He founded the important abbey on Iona, which became a dominant religious and political institution in the region for centuries. He is the Patron Saint of Derry. He was highly regarded by both the Gaels of Dál Riata and the Picts, and is remembered today as a Christian saint and one of the Twelve Apostles of Ireland.

In the Antiphoner of Inchcolm Abbey, the Iona of the East, situated on an island in the Firth of Forth, a 14th-century prayer begins O Columba spes Scotorum... "O Columbus, hope of the Scots".
