Memorial for John Wycliffe of Oxford

The Collect

O GOD, who hast endowed thy servant John Wycliffe of Oxford with clarity of faith and holiness of life: Grant us to keep with steadfast minds the faith which he taught, and in his fellowship to be made partakers of eternal glory; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Readings: (Wisdom vii. 7; St. John xvii. 18)

John Wycliffe of Oxford is chiefly honoured for his role in Biblical translation. In the early 1380's he led the movement for a translation of the Bible into English, and two complete translations  were made at his instigation. He proposed the creation of a new religious order of Poor Preachers who would preach to the people from the English Bible.
